INTRODUCTION TO THE HAUT-SAINT-FRANÇOIS RCM

The Haut-Saint-François regional county municipality (RCM) is located in southeastern Quebec, in the Estrie administrative region. The RCM comprises nearly 2300 km2, 83% of which is forested, and includes 14 municipalities and a population of nearly 23,000 residents. Immigrants account for less than 2% of this population.

Most of the RCM’s economic activities are located in its western part, where most residents live. A large portion of the RCM is covered by forest, a sought-after source of wood for pulp and paper plants and sawmills. The forest industry provides many jobs, and production of wood-based products, which accounts for nearly half of the manufacturing workforce, is one of the RCM’s key economic sectors.

In the agriculture sector, nearly 600 farms and businesses—producing grain, protein crops, hay, Christmas trees, vegetables, and non-timber forest products—contribute significantly to the regional economy. There is also a large number of cattle, dairy, and pig production operations, as well as sheep farms and aquaculture farms, the latter accounting for 58% of this type of agricultural production in the Estrie Region.

Valoris, an expanding industrial facility involved in residual materials recovery and re-use, has also been established in partnership with the City of Sherbrooke. Many of the 200 businesses operating in the area are run by self-employed workers (an increasingly widespread trend) and are facilitated by the RCM’s extensive high-speed Internet coverage.

People are available to provide you with support and guidance in your efforts to settle in the area (referrals to community services and resources, networking to find employment or housing, site visits, links to networking activities in the communities, etc.)
